About the Students

Students’ skills range from the very beginner to intermediate pianists who want to expand their musical knowledge and repertoire. Students are typically directed towards performing classical music, but jazz, blues, and popular music can be taught as well.

Beginning students in my studio will learn the fundamentals of piano playing: proper positioning, learning notes on the keyboard and staff, understanding rhythm and meter, and most importantly, listening. Basic music theory will be introduced and will be relatable and relevant to the music that the student is learning and playing.

Intermediate students will have a solid grasp on meter, rhythm, sight reading,  and simple harmony. Typically intermediate students continue to learn more complex music theory, harmonic progressions, and a more refined piano technique. Intermediate students will learn about the different styles of music through the different periods and will be expected to explore, learn, and practice these styles.

All students will learn how to develop good practice habits, how to be mindful listeners, and how to discuss and appreciate music in general. All students are expected to have the desire to practice frequently during the week in order to come to each lesson adequately prepared. And finally, all students will receive helpful, positive, and friendly instruction and feedback.

Lessons are taught at my home in Glenwood Springs. Students will play on a 1983 K. Kawai KG-2D grand piano.
